Look closely at the imposing figure before you. This is the Monumento a San Martín, honouring General José de San Martín, a hero of South American independence. It stands tall and proud, a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable leader who played a pivotal role in liberating Argentina, Chile and Peru from Spanish rule.

The monument was the brainchild of a 1932 Uruguayan law seeking to pay tribute to Argentina. Created by Uruguayan sculptor Edmundo Prati, it was inaugurated in 1963, a long and arduous journey for the artist, beset by bureaucratic hurdles and political shifts. Prati had to take on additional work to fund the project, even teaching at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas.

The monument stands at the intersection of Avenida Agraciada and Ascencio, a prominent location chosen because of its proximity to the former Argentine embassy and today the residence of the Reverend Moon. San Martín’s influence transcended borders and Uruguay, like other countries in the region, recognised his leadership as a symbol of freedom and liberty.

At the base of the monument, a carved inscription reads, \”TRIBUTE OF THE ARGENTINE ARMY TO THE EASTERN REPUBLIC OF URUGUAY””. Let the words linger as you contemplate the enduring symbolism of a powerful monument that serves as a shared space for remembering, reflecting and honouring the bravery and vision of General San Martín.”
