Feel the weight of history. This is the Parroquia San Francisco de Asís.

The Parroquia San Francisco de Asís stands before you a testament to faith and architectural prowess. Established on December 2 1840 it’s far more than just a church. It’s a living piece of Montevideo’s soul.

Originally the church was built in 1724 by the Jesuits. It wasn’t always the stunning Neo-Romanesque structure we see today. A later 19th-century rebuilding was overseen by French-Uruguayan architect Victor Rabu. He drew inspiration from the Basilica of St Sernin in Toulouse. This magnificent redesign was completed in 1870. Imagine the artisans their hands shaping stone and the community rallying together.

The Parroquia San Francisco de Asís didn’t just spring up overnight. It’s a story of renovations and restorations. Major changes took place in 1864 when a new temple was constructed. This was due to severe structural problems with the original building. In 1924 architect Juan Scasso added the crypt of the Lord of Patience. He also remodeled the façade. Further restoration occurred in 2004. This revitalization included cleaning the exterior repairing the tower and restoring the interior.

More than just bricks and mortar the Parroquia San Francisco de Asís holds precious historical records. Its archives house documents including marriage records of Giuseppe Garibaldi. It also has the baptism records of José Pedro Varela two prominent figures in Uruguayan history.

Its tall tower once served as a vital lookout point for Montevideo’s harbor. Can you imagine the sailors using this as a beacon in the distance?

Declared a National Historic Monument in 1975 the Parroquia San Francisco de Asís is more than a place of worship. It’s a cultural hub. It’s a symbol of Montevideo’s enduring spirit. It is a place to reflect a place to marvel a place to remember. Step inside and feel the past breathe around you.
