“Can you imagine,” whispered a voice, barely audible above the wind, “a statue so tall it could rival the gods themselves?”

We stand here, at the foot of La Turbie, a village perched high above Monaco. It clings to the slopes like an eagle to a cliff, its history as tumultuous as the winds that buffet it. This unassuming village boasts a relic from a time when emperors ruled the world: the Trophy of Augustus. The Romans, those masterful builders, erected this monument in the 1st century BC to celebrate Emperor Augustus’ victory over the fierce Ligurian tribes. Imagine, if you will, a monument so grand, so imposing, that it once soared to a height of 49 meters! Atop this colossal structure stood a statue of Augustus, a symbol of Roman dominance over the known world.

Sadly, time, as it often does, has taken its toll on this once magnificent edifice. Vandalism, wars, and even King Louis XIV’s paranoia – he feared it could become an enemy stronghold – led to its near destruction in 1705. Locals, resourceful in times of need, repurposed the stones, breathing new life into their homes and the nearby Saint-Michel Church. But the Trophy of Augustus was not forgotten. An American, Edward Tuck, a lover of France and a man of significant means, took it upon himself to finance its restoration in 1929. Thanks to his generosity, we can still marvel at the skeletal remains of this once imposing structure, a testament to the enduring power of history and the kindness of strangers.
