Settled in 1855. That’s when the seeds of what we now know as Apple Valley were sown. Originally a farming community named Lebanon Township, it remained relatively unchanged for nearly a century.
Apple Valley started its transformation in the mid-1950s. Residential developments began to replace the farmlands. Real estate developer Orrin Thompson played a crucial role. He sought to find the next area of growth in the Twin Cities. His firm identified a spot near County Road 42 and Cedar Avenue. Thompson then purchased land from the Brobacks. The Brobacks had built the city’s first four houses.
Here’s a fun fact about Apple Valley’s name. Thompson named the development after Apple Valley, California. However, an alternate story exists. Local developer Henry Broback said the area reminded them of Apple Valley, California. This was when driving east on County Road 42.
In 1968, voters decided to incorporate the township. They chose the name Apple Valley over Lebanon Valley. The vote was 1376 to 757.
Today Apple Valley is the 17th most populous city in Minnesota. The 2020 census recorded 56,374 residents. As of 2022, the estimated population was 55,416.
Apple Valley covers 17.57 square miles. Most of it is land. Only a small portion is water. The city features a rolling geography. The elevation varies by over one hundred feet. The downtown area lies in a shallow valley. This area formed the original core of the city.
Apple Valley has several notable attractions. The Minnesota Zoo is one of them. It is nationally recognized. It houses many animals from different climates. The city also hosts the annual Apple Valley Freedom Days. This July 4 festival includes a parade. It also includes a carnival and fireworks. The Apple Valley Winter Carnival takes place in February.
Independent School District 196 operates the local schools. There are six elementary schools. Also there are three middle and three high schools. The School of Environmental Studies is a magnet school for older students.
Several notable people have called Apple Valley home. This includes actor Brianna Brown. Also ice hockey player David Fischer, and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson.
From its humble beginnings as Lebanon Township to its current status, Apple Valley has grown and prospered. It offers a blend of suburban living with access to big-city amenities. Its history and community spirit make it a unique place.
