Did the name Minnehaha Falls ever reach your ears before today? It might have been through Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous poem, “The Song of Hiawatha”. The poem, published in 1855, tells the story of Hiawatha, a Native American hero, and his love for Minnehaha. Interestingly enough, Longfellow himself never actually visited these falls. He drew inspiration from the writings of others and even a daguerreotype, an early type of photograph. This image, captured in 1852, cemented the falls’ place in literary history. The very name “Minnehaha”, often translated as “Laughing Water” actually means “curling water” or “waterfall” in the Dakota language. So “Minnehaha Falls” really means “Waterfall Falls”! The falls you see cascading before you are a stunning display of nature’s power. But did you know that they’re geologically linked to another famous waterfall, Saint Anthony Falls? These falls, the only waterfall on the Mississippi River, played a crucial role in shaping Minnehaha Falls. Thousands of years ago, St. Anthony Falls was located further downstream. Over time, the water eroded the softer sandstone beneath a layer of limestone, causing the falls to recede upstream. This process eventually led to the formation of Minnehaha Falls, which also continues to move upstream at a much slower pace. Take a moment to admire the sheer force of the water plunging 53 feet into the gorge below. As you listen to the roar of the water, imagine the many artists, photographers, and writers who have been captivated by this scene over the years. Minnehaha Falls is a testament to the power of nature and a timeless symbol of beauty and inspiration.
