Standing right here on the Plymouth Avenue Bridge, you can almost feel the heartbeat of Minneapolis. This bridge, built in 1983, is a modern marvel, replacing an old iron truss bridge that stood here since 1886. It’s a testament to ingenuity, as it was the first segmental concrete girder bridge built in Minnesota. The builders used a unique construction method called a “form traveler” that shaped the concrete as it was built out from the piers. Clever, huh?

The builders were faced with a tricky situation, as they didn’t want to use the traditional method of building bridges, which required a lot of supportive structures that would block river traffic. They found a solution that was not only efficient but also allowed the river to flow freely while the massive structure was being built. The concrete itself is special too – it’s resistant to harsh winters and salty de-icing chemicals thanks to a unique post-tensioning system. Imagine, tubes running through the concrete, holding cables under high tension. It essentially squeezes the structure together, making it strong and durable.

Despite its strength, the bridge faced a serious challenge in 2010. Routine inspections revealed corrosion on some of the internal cables. The city took the precautionary measure of closing the bridge for repairs, and it was a long process. But thanks to meticulous work by engineers and the city, the bridge was reopened to traffic in 2013.

The Plymouth Avenue Bridge is a vibrant artery connecting the bustling city on both sides of the river. Look around, you can see it happening right now. Imagine, from morning commuters to the quiet, starlit nights, it gracefully carries everyone across the mighty Mississippi River. So the next time you cross the Plymouth Avenue Bridge, remember its story – a bridge built on ingenuity and resilience.
