Originally known as Bde Unma, meaning “the other lake” in the Dakota language, this 335-acre expanse of water holds a special place in the city’s heart.

Named for Harriet Lovejoy, wife of Colonel Henry Leavenworth who established Fort Snelling nearby in 1819, Lake Harriet has witnessed the city grow and evolve around it. In 1885, the lake and its surrounding land were gifted to the city by Colonel William S. King, marking the beginning of its journey as a public recreation haven. Today, the current bandshell, a beautiful structure designed by Milo Thompson and built in 1986, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Lake Harriet, a place where even amidst the echoes of past dramas, a sense of enduring beauty prevails.
