Eagan’s story begins long before its official founding. Imagine the Dakota people thriving on this land. They hunted fished and cultivated maize and squash. Their canoes glided along the Minnesota River. Eagan as we know it is named for Patrick Eagan the town’s first board chairman. He farmed a large parcel of land near the present-day town hall. He and his wife emigrated from Ireland settling in the Eagan area around 1853.

Eagan’s early settlers established it as an Irish farming community. It even earned the title “Onion Capital of the United States”. Its growth exploded after Highway 77’s expansion and a new six-lane bridge was built over the Minnesota River in 1980. The completion of Interstate 35E in the mid-1980s further fueled Eagan’s development.
