Has anyone ever noticed how some places seem to hum with a quiet power? The Church of St. Peter, perched here overlooking the meeting of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, is one of those places. It doesn’t shout its history, but whispers it. The Church of St. Peter isn’t just a pretty building. It’s a living testament to the faith and resilience of generations. Built in 1853, the Church of St. Peter replaced an earlier log chapel that had served the growing Catholic community in Mendota. This area was initially called “St. Peter’s,” even before Minnesota became a state. The original church, built by Father Lucien Galtier in 1842, had a dirt and bark roof that dramatically collapsed under its own weight. Can you imagine? The current Church of St. Peter, with its sturdy limestone walls and hand-split pine shingle roof, was a significant upgrade. The cost, $4,426, was a considerable sum in those days, but prominent figures like Henry Hastings Sibley and Alexander Faribault contributed to its construction. The Church of St. Peter has weathered its share of storms, both literal and figurative. The steeple has been replaced several times. The original, a modest tower without a bell, was blown down in the 1880s. Its replacement, complete with a bell shipped from St. Louis, met its demise in a 1951 tornado. For two years, the bell hung from a tree, still calling the faithful to worship, until a new, shorter steeple was built in 1953 for the church’s centennial. By the 1970s, the Church of St. Peter was showing its age. A restoration project, costing $284,000, brought the church back to its late-19th-century glory. This involved meticulous work. They removed fiberboard to reveal original stenciling from the 1850s. The pews, dating back to the turn of the century, were refinished. Even the slanted theater floor was replaced with a more historically accurate fir floor. The Church of St. Peter is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a beacon that has guided generations, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of history. While a newer church now serves the larger congregation, the Church of St. Peter still holds daily mass. This makes it the oldest church in continuous use in Minnesota. Its story is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
