Minnesota Renaissance Festival

Is it a dream? Or have we truly stumbled into a 16th-century English village? Nay, not England, but the Minnesota Renaissance Festival! Here in Shakopee, just outside the Twin Cities, the Minnesota River Valley transforms into a realm of fantasy and fun. The Minnesota Renaissance Festival first opened its gates in 1971 in Jonathan, Minnesota. With Tovah Feldshuh as its inaugural Queen, the festival drew over 25,000 visitors to its humble 22-acre field. It was then called “A Celebration of Nature, Art, and Life!” The festival eventually found its permanent home (at least for now) here in Shakopee in 1973. It’s blossomed into one of the largest and oldest Renaissance festivals in the United States. Over the years, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival has hosted the early careers of famous acts like magicians Penn & Teller, who debuted together here on August 19, 1975, and the Flying Karamazov Brothers. Even Jason Mraz once roamed these grounds, not as a musician, but as a “pickle boy” selling his wares. Today, the festival boasts a staggering 700 entertainers across 16 stages. You’ll find everything from jousting knights and bawdy comedians to musicians and magicians. Over 275 artisans showcase their handcrafted goods. You can watch demonstrations of traditional crafts like glassblowing and armor making. And don’t forget the food! 120 food booths offer everything from the classic roasted turkey leg to more unique treats. Be sure to try a scotch egg or warm up with some soup in a bread bowl. While the festival currently occupies a 400-acre site, its future isn’t entirely certain. The land is leased, and discussions about a new permanent location have been ongoing. This adds a touch of poignancy to each visit, making it even more important to savor the magic while it lasts.
