Ever wondered about Mexico’s journey into space? Right here before us stands the Agencia Espacial Mexicana the Mexican Space Agency. Established in 2010 it’s a relatively young agency. Its mission is ambitious though. It aims to promote and coordinate space-related education research and development across the country.
The AEM didn’t just appear overnight. It’s the successor to the Comision Nacional del Espacio Exterior CONEE. CONEE existed from 1962 to 1976. It conducted experiments in rocketry telecommunications and atmospheric studies. After CONEE dissolved some of its activities were continued by various organizations and universities. This includes the prestigious Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
The creation of the AEM itself was a process. It involved significant debate and collaboration. The bill was originally conceived by Jose Luis Garcia and Fernando de la Pena. It was presented to Congress and approved in 2010. Its passage wasn’t without its challenges. There were concerns from various sectors who felt they weren’t sufficiently consulted.
The AEM has faced funding challenges. While initial funding was pledged for an educational satellite this project didn’t materialize. Despite this the agency has pursued other significant ventures. For instance in 2017 they launched Nanoconect-1 a stratospheric balloon flight. This was declared Mexico’s first satellite launch from its own territory.
The Mexican Space Agency also signed an agreement with Astrobotic Technology. This is for the transportation of scientific instruments to the moon. This instrument will be the first Latin American instrument on the lunar surface. This is a proud moment for Mexican science. The AEM continues to expand collaborations. Recently it signed a cooperation agreement with the European Space Agency ESA. This paves the way for future joint projects in areas such as Earth observation and integrated applications.
The AEM has a significant role in Latin American space collaboration. Its involvement in the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency ALCE is particularly notable. The agency is still in its relatively early stages. However its dedication to promoting space-related activities in Mexico is clear. It aims to build Mexico’s capacity and enhance its presence in the global space community. The AEM represents a leap forward for Mexican science technology and international collaboration.
