Can you feel the rhythm? The pulse of Plaza Garibaldi vibrates beneath our feet. This isn’t just a square it’s the heart of Mexico City’s mariachi soul.

Plaza Garibaldi originally bore a different name Plaza Santa Cecilia. But in 1920 after the Mexican Revolution it was renamed to honor Lieutenant Colonel Peppino Garibaldi. He fought alongside the Maderistas. The Garibaldi Metro station even takes its name from this iconic plaza.

For decades Plaza Garibaldi has been synonymous with mariachi music. Day and night the air resonates with the vibrant sounds of trumpets guitars and violins. The Salu00f3n Tenampa a legendary cantina on the plaza’s north side is still going strong. It became the home of mariachi music in the 1920s. Cirilo Marmolejo and his band started playing there launching a tradition that continues to this day.

The Golden Age of Mexican cinema from the 1930s to the 1950s boosted mariachi’s popularity. Charro films featured stars like Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante singing mariachi songs. This further cemented the music’s association with Plaza Garibaldi. Gentlemen would pay mariachi bands to serenade their partners. This romantic tradition added to the plaza’s allure.

Sadly the area fell into disrepair. Insecurity became a major problem. Thieves and public drunkenness were commonplace. Many businesses left. Tourist numbers plummeted.

But Plaza Garibaldi’s iconic status remained. A revitalization plan was launched. The goal was to reclaim its former glory. The plan included enhanced security better infrastructure and new attractions.

The old kiosk and arcade were removed to create more space. A beautiful agave garden now sits at the plaza’s center. The streets surrounding the plaza were repaved. New lighting and benches were added. The San Camilito Gastronomic Market was renovated. It features small food stalls offering delicious Mexican fare.

Two remarkable additions are the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal and the School of Mariachi. The museum showcases the history and production of these iconic Mexican drinks. The School of Mariachi trains new musicians. It aims to preserve the traditional style of mariachi music.

The statues of legendary Mexican singers such as Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete found a new home on Republica de Honduras Street. This street has been closed to traffic. It now serves as a Boulevard of the Idols of Mexican Music.
