Eyüp Sultan Camii is named after Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a close companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He is believed to have died here during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in the 670s. New sultans would journey along the grand Cülüs Yolu, the Accession Way, to Eyüp Sultan Camii. Here, in a solemn ceremony, they would be girded with the Sword of Osman, symbolizing their ascension to the throne. This act, steeped in history and faith, underlined the significance of Eyüp Sultan Camii for the Ottoman Empire. Even today, the mosque remains a place of pilgrimage for many, a testament to its enduring spiritual and historical legacy.
