Glittering in the sunlight, the Angel of Independence stands before us. This iconic monument is more than just a statue. It’s a symbol of Mexico’s long and hard-won freedom. Its official name is Monumento a la Independencia, but everyone calls it El Ángel.

Look closely at the base of the Angel of Independence. You will see bronze sculptures that represent law, war, justice, and peace. Antonio Rivas Mercado designed the monument. The column itself rises 36 meters high. Inside, a staircase with 200 steps once led to a viewpoint. The capital at the top is Corinthian. Four eagles with outstretched wings adorn it. These are from the Mexican coat of arms.
At the summit stands the winged goddess of Victory. Enrique Alciati, an Italian artist, sculpted her. The Angel is made of bronze and covered in 24-carat gold. She weighs seven tons and measures 6.7 meters tall. In her right hand, she holds a laurel crown. This symbolizes victory. She offers it to Miguel Hidalgo and the nation. In her left hand, she holds a broken three-link chain. This represents freedom from 300 years of Spanish rule.
Construction of the Angel of Independence started in 1902. It was completed in 1910. President Porfirio Díaz ordered its construction. He wanted to honor the heroes of Mexican Independence.
In 1957, an earthquake struck. The Angel fell and broke into pieces. José Fernández Urbina restored it. The original head of the Angel is now in the Mexico City Historic Archive.
Beneath the Angel of Independence lies a mausoleum. Here rest the remains of heroes. They include Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos, and Leona Vicario. William Lamport, an Irishman who fought for independence, is also honored here.
