Who can forget the tragic tale of the SS Alert? Right here, beneath the waves, lies the final resting place of this ill-fated steamship. The SS Alert, once a familiar sight plying the waters between Melbourne and Geelong, met a heartbreaking end on a stormy December day in 1893. Built in the calmer waters of Scotland, the SS Alert was never truly equipped for the wild temperament of Bass Strait. The ship foundered near Cape Schanck, succumbing to hurricane-force winds and the relentless assault of mountainous seas. Of the sixteen souls onboard, only one survived. Robert Ponting, the ship’s cook, clung desperately to a piece of cabin door for over sixteen hours, tossed by the unforgiving waves. He was finally washed ashore at Sorrento, more dead than alive. Found half-buried in the sand, he was revived by locals who used brandy and the warmth of a St. Bernard dog to bring him back from the brink. It’s a stark reminder of the power of the sea and the fragility of human life, even amidst the hustle and bustle of our modern world. The wreck of the SS Alert lay undiscovered for over a century, a silent testament to a maritime tragedy, until it was finally found in 2007.
