Picture the elegant art deco facade of The Centre Ivanhoe. This impressive building stands proudly on Upper Heidelberg Road in Ivanhoe. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to a vibrant past.

The Centre Ivanhoe originally opened in April 1937. It was known then as the Heidelberg Town Hall. Designed by Peck & Kemter with A C Leith & Bartlett it was inspired by the Hilversum Town Hall in the Netherlands. The architects received the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects Street Architecture Medal in 1939 for their work. The Centre Ivanhoe is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. It’s described as the finest example of interwar brick Moderne style in Victoria.

But The Centre Ivanhoe is more than just beautiful architecture. It’s a place where history unfolds. Soon after its opening the council organised public dances. Bill Glennon managed these wildly popular events. An 18-piece band played in the Great Hall. Two smaller rooms the Streeton and Condor offered different musical styles. The Streeton featured old-time music while the Condor played jazz. Free buses ferried people from Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Over 2000 people attended Saturday night dances. Many locals remember meeting their spouses at the ‘Berg as it was affectionately known. These dances continued until the 1970s.

Imagine the scene. The polished floors gleam under the lights. Couples waltz to the music. Laughter fills the air. The building itself hums with the energy of joyous celebration. A place of community a place of memories. A place where history and romance intertwine.

Today The Centre Ivanhoe continues to serve the community. It’s a popular events venue. It hosts a variety of functions. But its story still whispers from the walls. It carries the echoes of music and laughter. It stands as a reminder of a time when community spirit thrived. When the ‘Berg was the place to be.

The Centre Ivanhoe is not just a building. It’s a legacy. It’s a vibrant part of Ivanhoe’s history. A testament to the architectural genius of its creators. A place where memories are made. And a place you can visit and experience its story firsthand.
