Gaze upon the Captain Cook Memorial Statue. A life-size bronze figure it stands proudly. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a testament to a complex history. A history interwoven with exploration and controversy.

The Captain Cook Memorial Statue located in Fitzroy Gardens commemorates Captain James Cook. This bronze figure was sculpted by Marc Clark in 1973. It wasn’t always here in the gardens though. Initially unveiled in 1974 it stood at a housing estate. Later it found its home near Cook’s Cottage.

Did you know the statue had a somewhat nomadic existence? After its initial placement it moved between different show houses. Eventually Doctor Sylvia Smith owned it. She decided moving it again was too costly. So it stayed in her garden. Later Dr Mark Hassed a dentist gifted it to the City of Melbourne. Then in 1997 it finally found its permanent place in Fitzroy Gardens.

The inscription on the statue reads ‘Marc Clark 1973’. It also names Captain James Cook and the date 1973. Another inscription mentions the donors Dr and Mrs Hassed. Their generosity ensured the statue’s preservation and its placement next to Cook’s Cottage. A remarkable journey for a remarkable figure.

Imagine the stories this bronze figure could tell. Of its travels across Melbourne. Of its quiet existence in a private garden. Of the eventual placement among the trees. This quiet space it now occupies allows for quiet reflection. It prompts visitors to ponder the legacy of Captain James Cook.

Today the Captain Cook Memorial Statue stands as a reminder. It reminds us of a pivotal figure in Australian history. Its presence is a point of discussion. It’s a complex legacy to grapple with. A legacy that continues to spark conversations and interpretations. The statue itself however remains a captivating bronze figure. A figure permanently etched in the landscape of Melbourne.
