Stand here on the site of Batman’s Hill. In the early days of Melbourne, this was a prominent landmark. John Batman, a grazier and adventurer, chose this spot for his home. His house was one of the largest and grandest in the settlement. But the story of Batman’s Hill is more than just a tale of one man’s home. It’s a story of transformation and change. The hill was a site of many activities. In 1839 it was the center of Melbourne’s first horse race. It was also home to the first cricket match in Victoria. The hill was even used as a hospital, before it was finally demolished in 1866 to make way for an expanding railway yard. Today, the physical hill is gone, but its memory lives on in the city’s layout. The Collins Street bridge follows the curve of the original hill. And a steel marker stands tall, marking the site of this once-important landmark.
