Perhaps you have heard of the Yivli Minaret Mosque. This mosque stands as a testament to Antalya’s rich history. Let’s step back in time and explore the story of this iconic landmark.

The Yivli Minaret Mosque is also known as Alaaddin Mosque. Some people even call it the Grand Mosque. Sultan Kayqubad I of the Anatolian Seljuk dynasty built it. The Yivli Minaret Mosque is more than just a mosque. It is part of a külliye. This is a complex of structures. The complex includes the Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev Medrese, a Seljuk lodge and dervish lodge. You can also find the vaults of Zincirkıran and Nigar Hatun.

The Yivli Minaret Mosque sits in Kaleiçi. This is Antalya’s old town center. It is right along Cumhuriyet Caddesi. It is conveniently next to Kalekapısı Meydanı. The mosque’s fluted minaret is called the Yivli Minare. Dark blue tiles decorate it. It has become a landmark and symbol of Antalya. The Yivli Minaret Mosque earned a spot on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in Turkey in 2016.

The first Yivli Minaret Mosque was built in 1230. It was fully reconstructed in 1373. The minaret stands 38 meters high. It is free-standing. The base is square stone. Eight fluted sections make up the minaret. Ninety steps lead to the top.

Ala ad-Din Kay Qubadh I reigned from 1220 to 1237. During his reign, the original mosque was built around 1225 to 1227. In the 14th century, the original mosque was destroyed. The Hamids rebuilt a new Yivli Minaret Mosque in 1373. They built it on the foundation of a Byzantine church. Its six domes are some of the oldest examples of multi-dome construction in Anatolia.

The Yivli Minaret represents a unique architectural design. Its fluted minaret is special. You can compare it with other minarets in Anatolia. Examples include the Afyon Gedik Ahmet Paşa Mosque and the Amasya Burmalı Minaret Mosque. Also consider the Tire Karahasan Mosque. One of the minarets of Edirne Üç Şerefeli Mosque is similar. The Yivli Minaret Mosque distinguishes itself. Its minaret has an unprecedented form and design.

The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums restored the minaret in 1953 and 1961. In 1973, the Directorate General of Foundations renewed its spire.

After Antalya was conquered by the Anatolian Seljuks in 1226. The Yivli Minaret Mosque was built in 1230. It was built using walls of a ruined old church. The church formerly existed at the same place. Building the mosque at the place of a ruined church shows the continuity of beliefs.

With its architectural design, the Yivli Minaret Mosque is the oldest durable example of multi-domed mosques in Anatolia. Marble columns with ancient column heads support these domes. Re-using ancient elements ensures an important structural aspect.

The Yivli Minaret is very important. Its original inscription says that Alaaddin Keykubat I built it. He commissioned many important buildings during his reign. He ruled between 1220 and 1237. These included caravanserais, mosques, and palaces. The Yivli Minaret Mosque is one of the most important buildings in Anatolia from this period. The unique form of the Yivli Minaret is regarded as one of the symbols of Antalya city. Today, the image is used in Antalya’s touristic materials. It is even the logo of the football team.

Exploring the Yivli Minaret Mosque provides more than just a history lesson. It gives an immersive experience. It connects you to the layers of history that shaped Antalya. The mosque’s fluted minaret showcases the Seljuk Turks’ transformation. The intricate tile work provides a tangible connection. Its serene courtyard links you to the artistry of bygone eras.
