Climbing the monumental staircase of Marseille-Saint-Charles, did you ever imagine this bustling hub was once a quiet cemetery? Marseille-Saint-Charles station, perched atop this hill, has witnessed Marseille’s transformation. Opened in 1848, Marseille-Saint-Charles initially served the Paris–Marseille railway and the Marseille–Ventimiglia railway. It quickly became a vital gateway. Travelers embarked on journeys to Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East, before air travel became common. The station’s grand staircase, designed by Eugène Senès and inaugurated in 1927, reflects this history. The statues adorning the staircase represent destinations reached from Marseille’s port. Marseille-Saint-Charles wasn’t always so connected. After World War II, the station expanded significantly. The north side, destroyed during the war, was rebuilt to house SNCF’s administrative offices. A new level was added for improved passenger flow. Behind the station, along Boulevard Voltaire, a goods yard operated until the late 1990s. Marseille-Saint-Charles has also faced darker moments. A bomb attack on New Year’s Eve 1983 tragically killed two people. The station has seen modernization efforts over the years. The arrival of the LGV Méditerranée high-speed rail line prompted a major redevelopment project in the late 1990s. This included a new metro station, a bus interchange, and the Halle Honnorat, a new hall filled with shops and services. By 2007, a €230 million renovation further transformed Marseille-Saint-Charles. A new pedestrian square was created, connecting the station to the Aix-Marseille University Saint-Charles site. Today, Marseille-Saint-Charles stands as the eleventh busiest station in France, with 16.5 million passengers in 2017. It serves as a vital hub for TGVs, connecting Marseille to Paris in just over three hours. Regional and local trains also depart from here. The station echoes with the stories of millions of journeys. Look closely, and you’ll see history etched into every corner of Marseille-Saint-Charles.
