Marvel at the grandeur of Place Castellane. This isn’t just any square. It’s a story etched in stone and water a testament to Marseille’s rich past.

Picture this in the 18th century King Louis XIV wanted to align the Porte d’Aix with the Porte de Rome. To achieve this ambitious goal the Rue de Rome needed extending. This extension would lead directly to where we stand today.

The Marquis Henri-Cesar de Castellane-Majastre owned the land. He generously donated it in 1774. His generosity gave the square its name. He even funded the initial development. By 1798 a fountain and a washhouse graced the square.

An obelisk was added in 1811 to celebrate Napoleon I’s son’s birth. This obelisk stood proudly until 1911. It now stands in the 9th district of Mazargues a silent witness to a bygone era.

The square wasn’t always as we see it. The original fountain and obelisk were replaced in 1913. The current fountain the magnificent Cantini Fountain is a masterpiece. It represents the Durance the Verdon the Rhone and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a 25-meter-high marvel of Carrara marble.

This isn’t just a pretty fountain. It’s a tribute to artistry. Sculptor Andre-Joseph Allar was inspired by renowned artists like Bernini and Rude. The city even made him a Correspondent of the Academy.

The fountain’s alignment is no accident. It is perfectly aligned with the Porte d’Aix. A subtle detail that speaks volumes about the square’s careful planning.

Today Place Castellane is a vibrant hub. It’s a meeting place a transport interchange and a testament to Marseille’s enduring spirit. It’s the heart of the city a place where history whispers to the present. Enjoy the atmosphere. Embrace the story of Place Castellane.
