In the heart of Marseille, nestled within the vibrant Beaumont district, stands the Église Évangélique Arménienne Marseille Beaumont. A whisper of history, a testament to resilience, this church isn’t just a building. It is a living story etched in stone and spirit. The Église Évangélique Arménienne Marseille Beaumont emerged from a 19th-century reform movement within the Armenian Apostolic Church. The first such church was founded in Istanbul in 1846. By 1915, on the eve of the Armenian Genocide, the Evangelical Armenian Church boasted a membership of approximately 51,000. Tragically, this number dwindled to a mere 14,000 after the genocide. Those who survived, scattered across the globe, sought solace and community in new lands. They established churches in their adopted countries, including France. In Marseille, a dozen churches sprang up, forming the Union des Eglises Evangéliques Arméniennes de France. Beaumont, home to a significant Armenian community, particularly in the La Rosière quarter, became a sanctuary. The first prayer meeting was held in 1926. Over the years, the spiritual work expanded. Prayer meetings blossomed into catechism classes for children and Armenian language lessons. In 1939, the Église Évangélique Arménienne de Beaumont was officially inaugurated. Under the guidance of devoted pastors, the church continued to thrive. Today, the heart of the church’s life is the Sunday service. It draws between 70 and 110 people. The service, open to all, is primarily conducted in French. The church also hosts prayer meetings, Bible studies, and programs for children, teenagers, and young adults. A popular weekly children’s center adds to the church’s vibrant community life. The Église Évangélique Arménienne de Beaumont stands as a beacon of faith and community. It is woven into the fabric of both the Armenian community in Marseille and the broader pastoral landscape of the city. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Armenian people. Their journey from tragedy to triumph is mirrored in the very stones of this remarkable church.
