Overlooking the Corniche Kennedy Villa Santa Lucia stands majestically. This 19th-century gem is more than just a villa. It’s a testament to Marseille’s rich history.

Villa Santa Lucia isn’t your typical seaside residence. It’s a complex of house and garden. The garden cascades down a hillside towards the sea. A series of terraces create a breathtaking spectacle.

The villa itself is nestled against the rock face. It’s an intricate blend of caves waterfalls greenhouses and a belvedere. Even the basement was transformed into charming rooms. The rocaille decorations are superb. This art form reaches its peak here. Some decorations are truly remarkable.

The history of Villa Santa Lucia is just as captivating as its architecture. The Mullot family lived here from 1887 to 1905. They called it “the White House”. It featured caves pools and multi-level terraces overlooking the sea. In 1894 the renowned rocailleur Gaspard Gardini worked his magic. He left his signature near a garden gate. You can also see it on the rear facade of the belvedere.

The villa changed hands many times. In 1922 Madame Khan renamed it “La Meuniere”. In 1984 it received its current name Villa Santa Lucia. In 2020 it was officially classified as a historical monument.

The gardens themselves are a botanical treasure. Initially featuring Mediterranean plants the gardens were significantly enhanced in the 1890s. Gaspard Gardini’s work transformed the space. Later in the 1970s landscape architect Tobie Loup de Viane added exotic species. Palms succulents ferns and bamboos now flourish. A remarkable collection of citrus trees thrives in Anduze pottery. Roses jasmine and cypress trees perfume the air.

Today Villa Santa Lucia is a living museum. A testament to the artistry of rocailleurs and the enduring beauty of the Mediterranean. It’s a place where history nature and art intertwine. It stands as a symbol of Marseille’s enduring charm. The villa’s story is a reminder that even the most beautiful places evolve and adapt. Yet they retain their unique charm.
