High on a hill overlooking the bustling city of Marseille, the Oppidum des Mayans stands as a silent testament to a time long past. The Oppidum des Mayans, also known as “Baou des Baumes” or “Castel Jussiou”, isn’t just a pile of rocks. It’s a portal to the 6th century BC. Imagine a Celtic civilization, choosing this strategic location. They saw the potential for defense and the commanding view of the surrounding area, including the Rade and the modern-day La Solidarité and Hôpital Nord districts. The Oppidum des Mayans was originally fortified with an impressive double defensive system. A sturdy rampart punctuated by ten square towers encircled the settlement. Within this outer wall, another inner enclosure provided an additional layer of protection. This unique double-walled design distinguishes the Oppidum des Mayans from other fortified settlements in the Midi region of southern France. Today, only fragments of these walls remain. Overgrown with dense, thorny vegetation, the site presents a challenge to those who seek to explore its secrets. But if you’re willing to brave the prickly undergrowth, you can still find traces of this ancient stronghold. Archaeological excavations, most notably those led by Henri Tréziny between 1990 and 1995, have revealed much about the Oppidum des Mayans. The site was occupied until the mid-5th century BC, with intermittent activity continuing into the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Ceramic remnants discovered during these excavations indicate an indigenous settlement. However, the layout of the dwellings between the ramparts and within the inner enclosure suggests a possibility of a mixed population. Perhaps a Greek garrison occupied the summit, coexisting with the indigenous inhabitants. This theory paints a picture of cultural exchange and interaction during a pivotal period in Marseille’s history. The Oppidum des Mayans is a classified historical monument since 2004, a recognition of its significance to the region’s heritage. Interestingly, the Oppidum des Mayans shares its location with a more recent, albeit equally intriguing, historical anomaly: an abandoned housing development from the 1970s or 80s. It’s a stark contrast, the ancient ruins juxtaposed against the skeletal remains of modern architecture, a ghostly reminder of a real estate venture gone awry. As you stand on the hilltop, surrounded by the remnants of both ancient and more recent pasts, let the wind carry you back to a time of Celtic settlements and Greek influence. Let the Oppidum des Mayans whisper its stories of resilience, conflict, and cultural exchange. It’s a journey through time, a glimpse into the layers of history that have shaped Marseille into the vibrant city it is today.
