“Charity for the soul, a roof for the head.” Those words echoed in the halls of La Vieille Charité for centuries. La Vieille Charité started as a solution to Marseille’s growing indigent population in the 17th century. The city council, following a royal edict, decreed a place to house the city’s poor. La Vieille Charité, “The Old Charity,” was born. Initially, the chosen location was near the Major Cathedral, on the north slope of Butte des Moulins. However, the project stalled for nearly three decades. Finally, in 1670, Pierre Puget, a renowned architect and a son of the Panier district, took up the task. This would become one of his greatest achievements. La Vieille Charité rose from the ground in a striking blend of pink and white stone, quarried from La Couronne. Four wings enclosed a rectangular courtyard, offering a sense of sanctuary. Three levels of arcaded galleries opened onto this space, creating a vibrant hub of activity. The centerpiece? Puget’s masterpiece, a baroque chapel crowned with an oval dome. The fronton, added later during the Second Empire, depicted Charity welcoming needy children, flanked by pelicans. It’s a powerful image that speaks to the building’s original purpose. For over a century, La Vieille Charité served as a shelter. After the revolution, its role shifted. It became a hospice for children and the elderly. Then, in the early 20th century, the army repurposed it, also using it for social housing. By the 1940s, La Vieille Charité had fallen into disrepair. Le Corbusier himself highlighted the building’s neglected state. Thankfully, in 1961, the city of Marseille initiated a major restoration project. This meticulous work lasted 25 years, finally concluding in 1986. Today, La Vieille Charité stands as a vibrant cultural center. It houses the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology, showcasing a fascinating collection of artifacts. The Museum of African, Oceanic, and Amerindian Arts (M.A.A.O.A) adds another layer of cultural richness. Temporary exhibitions and a cinema further enrich the experience. Several other institutions call La Vieille Charité home, including the International Poetry Center of Marseille (C.I.P.M.), the National Center for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S), and the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (E.H.E.S.S). From a shelter for the poor to a hub of culture and knowledge, La Vieille Charité’s journey reflects the spirit of Marseille itself. It reminds us that even in the oldest of cities, transformation and renewal are always possible.
