“Can you believe that Bremen almost didn’t exist?” Today we are in front of Hohweg in the district of Walle. Hohweg is a quiet residential area. But it’s part of a city with a rich history. Bremen has been an independent city for most of its existence. It even survived attempts by the Church and Sweden to control it. Bremen ultimately became part of Germany in 1871. The Hohweg is part of a city that played a key role in emigration to America. It was also an important center for Germany’s growing colonial trade. The Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping company was founded in Bremen in 1857. It grew into one of the world’s most influential shipping companies. Bremen faced destruction during World War II. Nearly two-thirds of the city was destroyed. But the people of Bremen rebuilt their city. They restored its unique character. Today the Hohweg is part of a thriving city. Bremen is a major center for culture and the economy in Northern Germany. It’s a reminder that even in quiet corners of the city, history echoes through the streets.
