The Your World Made Better Mural is part of a larger project to revitalize the Lagusnilad Underpass, a passage that bridges Intramuros and Manila City Hall. The underpass, once a shadowy spot, was reborn in 2020 as part of Mayor Isko Moreno’s “Ang Bagong Maynila” (The New Manila) program. The mural itself is a key feature of this transformation. It’s a collaboration between the city government and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). The artists behind this masterpiece are the Gerilya collective, known for their politically and socio-culturally charged works. They’ve taken inspiration from the famed muralist Botong Francisco to create a sprawling work that captures the spirit of Manila. The Your World Made Better Mural depicts key moments in Philippine history. From pre-colonial times through the Spanish colonial era, the Philippine-American War, World War II, the First Quarter Storm, Martial Law, and up to the present day, it’s all here. And it’s not just about the past. The mural also honors modern-day heroes, the doctors, nurses, and frontline workers who battled the COVID-19 pandemic. The style is deliberately accessible, rendered in a comic book aesthetic to engage the everyday Manileño.
