Thinking about a place that started as a community college and rose to university status? That’s the University of Makati or UMak for short. It stands as a beacon of accessible education in Metro Manila. UMak’s story is one of transformation and commitment to the community.

The University of Makati started in 1972. It began as Makati Polytechnic Community College. Back then, it offered technical and vocational programs. These programs focused on industrial and business technology. In 1987, it got a new name. It became Makati College.

Fast forward to 1991. Fort Andres Bonifacio College joined forces with Makati College. This merger marked a significant step. The institution was renamed Pamantasan ng Makati. This change paved the way for it to become a chartered university. The goal was to make it fully owned by the local government.

In 2002, another change occurred. City Ordinance No. 2002-111 came into effect. It officially changed the name to University of Makati. This is the name we know today.

UMak is more than just its history. It’s about providing opportunities. It gives less privileged citizens access to quality education. The university strives to make higher education affordable. UMak continues this mission today.

UMak’s location is interesting. It sits in West Rembo. It’s near Makati Park and Garden. The Pasig River flows nearby. This gives students a unique environment. It blends urban life with natural spaces. The Makati Aqua Sports Arena is also close. Students use it for swimming classes.

UMak has several buildings. There are academic buildings 1, 2, and 3. The administrative building houses important offices. The Health and Physical Science Building is for related studies. There is even a stadium for sports and events.

In 2012, UMak was a pioneer. It piloted the Senior High School Modelling Program. This was in partnership with the Department of Education. In 2022, the School of Law had a milestone. Its first graduating class achieved a 100% passing rate. This was on the Philippine Bar Examination.

The University of Makati offers a wide range of programs. These include bachelor’s degrees. They also have master’s and doctorate programs. The university has various institutes. These cover fields like pharmacy and nursing. There are also colleges. These focus on business, technology, and education.
