In 1926, Senator Jose P. Laurel sought a home for his growing family. He found it in Paco, Manila, a bahay na bato built in 1864. This wasn’t just any house. This was the Laurel Mansion, a structure that had witnessed history. It had withstood the Philippine Revolution, the Philippine-American War, and even the devastating earthquakes of 1880 that crumbled other Manila structures. Known as Villa Peñafrancia, the Laurel Mansion stood as a testament to resilience. The Laurel family occupied this grand house for 29 years, filling its rooms with life and laughter. The ground floor, or piso bajo, with its sturdy adobe walls and Machuca tiles, housed the office, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Upstairs, on the piso alto, wooden floors and walls welcomed the family into their living quarters. Here, in the sala mayor, cocina, and comedor, they gathered, dined, and made memories. A unique feature of the Laurel Mansion was its capis shell sliding windows. These delicate shells, some 14,273 pieces, adorned the entire second floor, filtering the sunlight and casting a warm glow on the rooms within. Each window, with its three divisions and six sliding panels, told a silent story of Filipino craftsmanship. During the restoration of the Laurel Mansion in the mid-1990s, great care was taken to preserve these unique windows. Damaged capis shells were replaced with identical indigenous materials, ensuring the house retained its original charm. Modern sliding rollers replaced the old tongue and groove mechanism, a subtle nod to the passage of time. The Laurel Mansion stands today not just as a beautiful example of bahay na bato architecture, but as a symbol of the Laurel family’s enduring legacy. It is a place where history and artistry intertwine, a place where the past whispers stories to the present.
