Envision a place where learning feels like play. That place is Museo Pambata. It is Manila’s interactive children’s museum. Museo Pambata is located in the Ermita district near Rizal Park.

Established in 1994, Museo Pambata broke the mold. Forget “look but don’t touch.” This museum encourages exploration. It invites children to learn through their senses.

Nina Lim-Yuson envisioned this space. As an early childhood educator and mother, she wanted a place like the Boston Children’s Museum. She dreamed of a similar space in the Philippines.

In 1993, Nina and her mother presented their idea to Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim. He quickly approved it. The Manila City Council granted Museo Pambata use of the Elks Club Building. This was rent-free for ten years.

Educators, artists and architects helped bring the museum to life. They designed themed rooms pro bono.

The Museo Pambata opened its doors on December 21 1994. It became the country’s first interactive children’s museum.

Museo Pambata features eight themed rooms. Each offers a unique learning experience.

In Kalikasan, children discover environmental concerns. They explore a simulated rainforest and seabed. Maynila Noon shows artifacts from turn-of-the-century Manila. Paglaki Ko showcases various careers and allows children to visualize their futures. I Love My Planet Earth teaches about climate change.

Pamilihang Bayan is a replica marketplace. Kids can role-play as store owners. Katawan Ko explores the human body. Bata sa Mundo displays dolls from around the world.

The Museo Pambata also has a library. There are spaces for changing exhibits and events.

Museo Pambata advocates for children’s rights. Its programs focus on education, health and recreation.

The Museo Pambata held a Rights of the Child Awareness Tournament in 1995. In 2001-2002, they held Mag-ROCK Tayo! These events familiarized children with their rights. They were stated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Mobile Library Program began in 1995. It aimed to promote reading among disadvantaged youth. A roving library van provided books to children in Manila.

Museo Pambata launched Aklat:KKK in 1998. This promoted literacy through outreach and in-house programs.

Sa Aklat Sisikat! was a Manila-wide literacy campaign. It combatted declining reading abilities.

Museo Pambata received a Special Commendation in Bologna, Italy. This was for inspiring new children’s museums in Asia. It was also nominated for a Leading Cultural Destinations Award.

Museo Pambata closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened on December 6 2024. This reopening marked its 30th anniversary.
