Tucked away in Quezon City, San Francisco del Monte Church whispers tales of resilience and faith. The San Francisco del Monte Church, also known as the Basilica Minore de San Pedro Bautista, isn’t just a church; it’s a time capsule. It stands as one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, its roots reaching back to 1590. Originally a humble bamboo and nipa chapel, it was the vision of Pedro Bautista, a Franciscan missionary seeking solace amidst the bustling city. He found this hilly, 250-hectare haven, complete with thick woods, a creek, and eight refreshing springs. Bautista’s chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Montecelli, soon blossomed into a retreat for missionaries, a novitiate, and a sanctuary for weary colonial officials. The simple chapel evolved, transforming into a wooden structure in 1591 and later fortified with adobe in 1599, thanks to architect Domingo Ortigas and the generosity of Don Pedro Salazar. San Francisco del Monte Church has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. The Limahong-led uprising of 1639 saw the church become rebel headquarters, suffering damage in the process. A devastating earthquake in 1645 left the church and convent in ruins, abandoned for 39 long years. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, the San Francisco del Monte Church rose again in 1699, rebuilt in stone under the watchful eye of Fr. Francisco de Mondéjar and funded by Don Tomás de Endaya. This marked the installation of its magnificent Baroque altar. In 1895, amidst the Philippine Revolution, the friars departed, and revolutionary forces occupied the hallowed halls of San Francisco del Monte Church. The church witnessed further change in the 1960s. A bold expansion project transformed the original structure into the sanctuary we see today, with a new nave extending outward. The old facade, with its niches holding statues of the Four Evangelists, now resembles a transept, a testament to the church’s evolving history. The three Baroque altarpieces within the sanctuary, adorned with statues of revered saints, tell their own stories. A life-size image of San Pedro Bautista himself, enshrined in the central niche, watches over the faithful. Above him, the Madonna and Child statue of Our Lady of Monticelli evokes a sense of gentle protection. The left altarpiece honors St. Clare of Assisi, with St. Dominic above, while the right reredos features St. Anthony of Padua and St. Francis of Assisi. Beneath the original altar lies a hidden gem, the Holy Cave of St. Pedro Bautista. This quiet space, once a place of contemplation for Bautista and his fellow martyrs, adds another layer of intrigue to the church’s rich tapestry. In 2020, San Francisco del Monte Church received a prestigious honor, the title of Minor Basilica, solidifying its place as not just a historical landmark but a spiritual beacon.
