Caloocan Cathedral whispers tales of resilience and rebirth. Here, at the intersection of 10th Avenue and A. Mabini Street, stands a beacon of faith that has witnessed centuries of triumphs and tribulations. Caloocan Cathedral, formally known as San Roque Cathedral-Parish, isn’t just a beautiful structure. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Caloocan. Its story begins humbly in 1765 as a small visita, a chapel-of-ease, nestled in Libis Aromahan. The community, gifted with statues of San Roque and Nuestra Señora de la Soterraña de Nieva, found solace and strength within its walls. In 1815, this humble chapel was elevated to parish status, marking a significant step in its journey. Construction of a grander church began in 1819, finally completed in 1847, a testament to the growing community’s devotion. Caloocan Cathedral, however, was not immune to the storms of history. It served as a meeting place for Katipuneros during the Philippine Revolution. In 1899, it provided refuge to General Antonio Luna during the Philippine-American War, only to be partially destroyed by American forces. Later, it was even used as a field hospital. Caloocan Cathedral bore the scars of these conflicts. Yet, like the resilient spirit it housed, it rose again and again. Reconstructed in 1914, renovated in 1981, and declared a Jubilee Church in 2000, Caloocan Cathedral has continuously renewed itself. In 2003, a momentous occasion arrived. Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Kalookan, and Caloocan Cathedral became its seat, further solidifying its importance. The dedication of the newly renovated altar-sanctuary in 2015, marked by the gift of a relic of San Roque from Pope Francis, was a crowning moment in its long history. Today, Caloocan Cathedral stands as a symbol of enduring faith. It’s a place where echoes of history intertwine with the vibrant pulse of the present, a place where the stories of San Roque and the people of Caloocan continue to inspire.
