Heard of the echoes of revolution whispering through its walls? The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church stands as a silent witness. It has seen San Juan transform over more than a century. Today we explore the history and the hidden stories of Pinaglabanan Church.

The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church also known as Pinaglabanan Church derives its name from San Juan Bautista. San Juan is named after him. The city was once called San Juan del Monte because of its hilly landscape.

Let’s take a step back in time. The parish was established in 1894. A year later construction began on this church. Architect Luis Arellano designed it. Mariano Artiaga provided financial support. Roman Pérez a Franciscan became the first parish priest.

Now imagine August 30 1896. The land in front of the Saint John the Baptist Parish Church is not peaceful. It is a battleground. Filipino and Spanish troops clashed here. This was the Battle of San Juan del Monte. It marked one of the first sparks of the Philippine Revolution.

The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church suffered damage during the Revolution. Ramón J Fernández led the repair efforts. Later in 1951 Hernando Antiporda oversaw renovations and expansion. He later became Auxiliary Bishop of Manila. Otilio A Arellano grandson of the original architect preserved the original facade. The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church gained two additional front doors.

Years passed and the church continued to evolve. In 1975 two mortuary chapels were added. 1983 brought more changes. The nave was lengthened. The choir loft was removed. A crucifix was installed above a new altar. The antique image of Saint John the Baptist was moved to the Saint Joseph Chapel.

More construction occurred in 1987. A rectory social hall and crypt were built. A Perpetual Adoration Chapel followed but was later replaced by a school. A smaller air-conditioned Adoration Chapel was finished in 2009. It was located near the church’s southern entrance.

The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church was declared a historical landmark in 1989. This recognition acknowledged its importance to San Juan.

In 1994 the San Juan Centennial Belfry was inaugurated. Cardinal Jaime Sin blessed it. The belfry was designed to match the facade. It houses the church bell dating back to 1896.

Most recently in 2024 the Saint John the Baptist Parish Church received a special title. It became an Archdiocesan Shrine. A Holy Door was opened to mark its 130th jubilee year. John the Baptist was also declared the patron saint of San Juan City.

From its beginnings as a simple church to its current status as a revered shrine Saint John the Baptist Parish Church has played a vital role. Its walls echo with prayers history and the enduring spirit of the community it serves. The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church stands tall. It represents faith resilience and the rich heritage of San Juan.
