Amidst the bustling energy of Manila, discover the legacy of Arellano University. Arellano University stands as a testament to the vision of one man, Florentino Cayco Sr. In 1938, Cayco, the first Filipino Undersecretary of Public Instruction, laid the foundation for what would become a prominent institution. Originally named Arellano Law College, it honored Cayetano Arellano, the first Filipino Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Arellano University weathered the storms of World War II, closing its doors from 1941 to 1945 before reopening and expanding its horizons beyond law. Cayco became the university’s first president in 1946, and under his leadership, Arellano University officially earned its university status in 1947. The university continued to grow, adding new colleges and programs. The original campus, located in Plaza Guipit, eventually moved to Legarda Street in Sampaloc, Manila in 1955, where a modern four-story building was constructed. A significant development in Arellano University’s history came in 1954 with the establishment of the institute of nursing and a separate law school. The Arellano University School of Law is now autonomously managed by the Arellano Law Foundation. Arellano University isn’t just about academics; it also has a vibrant athletic scene. The Arellano University Chiefs compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), having joined in 2009. Their nickname, “Chiefs”, pays tribute to Cayetano Arellano’s esteemed position as the first Chief Justice. Today, Arellano University boasts seven campuses across Metro Manila, with the main campus still located on Legarda Street. Its journey from a law college to a multi-campus university reflects the dedication to education and the enduring legacy of its founder.
