On this very ground, a vital piece of Manila’s history lies hidden beneath our feet. This is the site of the Simbahan at Kumbento ng San Juan Bautista de Bagumbayan Plaque. The Simbahan at Kumbento ng San Juan Bautista de Bagumbayan, a church and convent, once stood proudly here. It was the first church and convent of the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR) in Manila. Dedicated to San Juan Bautista, it held a significant place in the city’s spiritual landscape. The Simbahan at Kumbento ng San Juan Bautista de Bagumbayan began its journey in a rather unusual way. It was originally the home of Governor-General Pedro de Acuña. Then on September 10, 1606, it was purchased and consecrated by the Recollects, led by Father Juan de San Jeronimo. Imagine the transformation from a governor’s residence to a bustling religious center. The church served not just as a place of worship. It also acted as the provincial curia and training center for Recollect missionaries. These missionaries were preparing for their missions to Zambales, Mindanao, Calamianes Islands, and Mindoro. The Simbahan at Kumbento ng San Juan Bautista de Bagumbayan faced its share of challenges. In 1644, it was demolished by order of Governor-General Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera. While it was later rebuilt, it met its final demise during the British occupation of Manila in 1764. Today, only the Simbahan at Kumbento ng San Juan Bautista de Bagumbayan Plaque marks this historical site. It serves as a reminder of the church’s rich history and its role in shaping Manila’s religious landscape. The plaque stands as a silent testament to the enduring spirit of faith and the ebb and flow of history.
