Picture this. You are standing before the Jesus de la Peña Chapel in Marikina. Its simple facade speaks volumes. It whispers tales of centuries past.

This unassuming chapel holds immense historical significance. It’s more than just a place of worship. It marks the very beginning of Christianity in Marikina. Before the Spaniards arrived this area was home to river dwellers. Their lives revolved around the Marikina River. The Jesuits changed all that.

In 1630 they arrived bringing with them a small image of Jesus. Fired with missionary zeal they held the first Mass. This momentous occasion took place in a humble storage house on April 16th 1630. This wasn’t just any Mass. It was the seed from which Marikina’s Christian community grew.

The Jesuits chose a remarkable location for their order. They built on the west bank of the river amid large rocks. Inspired by this rugged beauty they named the place Jesus de la Peña Jesus of the Rock. The name perfectly reflected the site’s character. The chapel became the heart of the new mission. It was a testament to faith resilience and the power of a simple act of worship.

Later the Augustinians took control of the mission. However floods regularly threatened the chapel. So Governor Gabriel Cruz Elasque ordered its transfer to Santa Elena. This relocation ensured the chapel’s survival. It preserved this important piece of Marikina’s history.

Despite the move the chapel underwent renovations in 1988. These restorations preserved its Neo-Romanesque design. This style is evident in its arched openings and light facade. You can see the monolithic columns used for support and decoration. These are hallmarks of Roman and early Christian architecture. Even the quaint bell tower speaks to its simple origins. It stands as a quiet witness to centuries of prayer and devotion.

The Philippine National Historical Commission recognized the chapel’s importance. They placed a marker detailing its historical significance. It states that the first Mass was held on this site in 1630. It celebrates the Jesuit missionaries and the image of Christ venerated by the town. This small unassuming chapel is far more than just a building. It’s a living monument a testament to faith and a cornerstone of Marikina’s rich history. It invites you to reflect on the journey of faith. This is Jesus de la Peña Chapel a place where history and spirituality converge.
