This grand institution boasts the oldest extant university charter in Asia a claim solidified by historical records and papal decrees. Imagine the Spanish friar Miguel de Benavides third Archbishop of Manila. He bequeathed his library and personal wealth to establish this esteemed seat of learning. His vision a seminary-college to train young men for the priesthood blossomed into a sprawling university.

The University of Santo Tomas wasn’t always in Sampaloc. Its original home was in the historic walled city of Intramuros. It began as the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario. Later it was renamed Colegio de Santo Tomás honoring the Dominican theologian St Thomas Aquinas. The name change reflects the deep Catholic roots that still define the university.

But the University of Santo Tomas is more than just a place of worship. It is a place of learning. It houses the first and oldest engineering law medical and pharmacy schools in the Philippines. These pioneering institutions have shaped generations of Filipino professionals influencing various sectors. The university continues to evolve. It now offers over 180 undergraduate and graduate specializations. Twenty-six of its programs are recognized as Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development by the Commission on Higher Education a testament to its academic prowess.

Its history is not without hardship. The University of Santo Tomas served as an internment camp during World War II. Thousands of American and Allied civilians were held within its walls. The original Intramuros campus was tragically destroyed by fire. Yet from the ashes the University of Santo Tomas rose again. It relocated to its present campus in Sampaloc a sprawling 21.5 hectares. The move reflects the institution’s unwavering commitment to education.

Today the University of Santo Tomas stands as a symbol of national pride. Its alumni include notable figures four presidents of the Philippines 17 senators nine chief justices 20 national artists and numerous billionaires. These individuals showcase the transformative power of education. Their success is a testament to the university’s enduring legacy.
