In 1874, a spark ignited in Manchester, a passion for racquet sports that would soon find its home. The Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club, a name synonymous with elegance and athleticism, began its journey not here, but on Miller Street. Let’s step back to a time before the familiar brick and terracotta façade of the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club graced Blackfriars Road. The expanding railways of Manchester demanded a new location for the burgeoning club. In 1880, the club found its permanent residence here, a testament to its enduring legacy. The Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club stands as the oldest sports facility in Greater Manchester still serving its original purpose. The club’s architectural grandeur, designed by George Tunstal Redmayne, earned it Grade II* listed status in 1996. Imagine the echoes of spirited matches within these walls, the thwack of racquets against balls, the hushed anticipation of crucial points. Originally, the club boasted two racquets courts, but no tennis court. Upon relocating to Blackfriars Road, the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club gained a real tennis court and retained a single racquets court. Fast forward to 1925, the club embraced the rising popularity of squash, adding a dedicated squash court to its repertoire. This blend of traditional and modern racquet sports cemented the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club’s place as a dynamic sporting hub. Today, the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club continues to thrive, offering its members not only world-class facilities but also a connection to a rich sporting heritage. Within its walls, the spirit of competition and camaraderie lives on, a testament to the enduring appeal of racquet sports in the heart of Manchester.
