The story of Schloss Waldthausen begins with Martin Wilhelm von Waldthausen. He was a visionary with great ambitions. In 1908, he acquired 95 hectares from Budenheim. By 1910, his dream villa was complete.

Hans Bühling designed the villa. He drew inspiration from Staufen palace buildings. This style still defines the property today. The villa’s construction expressed Martin Wilhelm von Waldthausen’s ambitions. He wanted to rival Kaiser Wilhelm II’s castle projects.

Imagine the splendor. An extensive park surrounds Schloss Waldthausen. Terraced gardens added to the beauty. A square tower rises above the building. It gives Schloss Waldthausen a majestic look.

Local craftsmen from Mainz and Rheinhessen contributed to the interior. Their work showcases the finesse of the time. The total cost reached an incredible 18 million marks.

Martin Wilhelm von Waldthausen left Germany in 1914. He never returned to his Schloss Waldthausen. French troops occupied the Schloss Waldthausen briefly after World War I.

Later, during World War II, the villa housed mothers and children. They were escaping war dangers. US and French troops occupied Schloss Waldthausen after the war. General Marie-Pierre Kœnig planned to use it as his residence.

The Bundesluftschutzschule used Schloss Waldthausen from 1956 to 1978. The Bundeswehr also used the grounds. In 1978, the city of Mainz acquired Schloss Waldthausen. It was declared a protected monument.

In 1982, the Sparkassen- und Giroverband Rheinland-Pfalz bought the property. They renovated the villa. From 1988, it housed the Sparkassenakademie Rheinland-Pfalz. In recent years, Schloss Waldthausen stood empty.

But a new chapter is beginning. In 2026, ChÂteauform’ will open an international seminar center here. Schloss Waldthausen will welcome guests from across Europe.
