The KUZ isn’t just one space. It’s three. There is the Werkhalle known for its industrial ambience. The modern Lehrsaal is perfect for smaller gatherings. Finally there is the Waschhaus which offers indoor and outdoor areas. This space provides a casual bar-like atmosphere. The KUZ even has a mobile production studio. But the KUZ’s story goes back further. Much further. Long before it was a cultural center the red brick building served a different purpose. Built in 1888 by the Reichswehr it was a garrison washhouse. It served the soldiers stationed at the nearby military hospital. The hospital stood where the Fort Malakoff and the Hyatt Hotel now stand. Later the building became an inter-company training center. It was one of Germany’s first. Apprentices from major Mainz companies trained there. This was before the KUZ’s cultural reign.
Today the KUZ stands as a testament to Mainz’s rich history and vibrant culture. A unique blend of modern technology and historic architecture it’s a special place.
