“Erzbischof Liuthard, a name not often whispered,” I begin, “founded something remarkable here.” We’re standing before the Mauritius-Gemeinde. It’s a place with a history stretching back over a millennium.

Liuthard established this religious house around 888. His vision was clear. The Stiftsherren of the Mauritius-Gemeinde were to serve in the Hofkapelle. This chapel was near the royal Palatium. The Palatium was the king’s palace. Imagine the power dynamics then. Religious duties intertwined with royal service.

The full realization of Liuthard’s vision is credited to Erzbischof Hatto I. He took over between 891 and 913. Sadly, written records from that time are scarce. Historians piece together the story from later accounts.

The Mauritius-Gemeinde held a special place among Mainz’s religious institutions. It was the oldest Kollegiatstift, traced back to Erzbischof Liuthard. Yet, its rank was the lowest until the 13th century. Perhaps its early establishment was overshadowed by later, grander foundations.

Interestingly, the Mauritius-Gemeinde was the first to adhere to the Aachener Regel. This set of rules, established in 816, guided religious life. The church was not just old. It was also a pioneer.

Fast forward to 1406. The church St. Mauritius received confirmation of its “Satzungen.” This confirmation came from the Mainzer Generalvikar. These statutes were rules that governed its operations. The confirmation ensured the continued order and function of the church.

The Mauritius-Gemeinde engaged in a dispute with the Stift St. Johannis. This disagreement occurred in 1698. It was a precedence dispute. Details are sparse but it reveals the competitive nature of religious institutions.
