Let’s explore its story. The current mast wasn’t always here. It was rebuilt in 2013/14. The old one stood 20 meters southwest. It was taken down. Some aerial views might still show the old setup.

The tower’s history is interesting. It was built in 1980. It is located in Mainz-Kastel. Mainz-Kastel is part of Wiesbaden. Wiesbaden is in Hesse. Usually, the Hessische Rundfunk would be in charge. However, this tower serves the city of Mainz. Mainz is in the SWR broadcasting area. Without this Sender Mainz-Kastel, Mainz would have poor reception.

Initially, only SWR programs broadcasted. DABplus launched later. Then, hr programs and private channels joined.

Analog ARD broadcasts stopped with DVB-T’s arrival. The Sender Mainz-Kastel no longer transmits TV signals. Hohe Wurzel and Donnersberg stations took over TV broadcasting.
