Perhaps you’ve noticed the serene stretch of green before us. This is the Mombacher Rheinufer. It is a nature reserve teeming with life and history.

The Mombacher Rheinufer spans 64 hectares. It borders the Rhine to the north. This protected area is divided into western and eastern sections. The A643 highway cuts through the eastern part, running north to south.

Designated as a Naturschutzgebiet in 1995, the Mombacher Rheinufer provides a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. Imagine this area centuries ago. Farmers, mariners, and fishermen populated Mombach. The Rhine was their lifeblood.

Mombach itself has a rich past. Archeological finds confirm prehistoric settlements here. The village likely formed during the Frankish realm. Mombach celebrated its 750-year jubilee in 2006. The event commemorated a document from 1256. Yet, the area’s history stretches back much further.

In the past, Mombach faced numerous challenges. During the Thirty Years’ War, French troops occupied Mainz. They devastated the left bank of the Rhine in 1688. However, imperial forces later reconquered Mainz.

The location had been surrounded by a wall during the electoral times. Parts of this wall are components of old buildings to this day. The historical core of Mombach is the Lindenplatz.

In 1792, General Custine abolished the electoral administration. Mombach became part of French territory after the Treaty of Lunéville. Later, the region became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. Mainz transformed into a federal fortress.

The arrival of the railway in 1859 spurred rural and industrial growth. The founding of a chemical production site in 1856 further boosted the economy.

At the start of the 20th century, Mombach gained modern utilities. Town gas, water supply, and sewer connections were introduced. An electric tram connected Mombach to Mainz.

In 1907, Mombach became one of Mainz’s first suburbs. This expansion made Mainz a large city with over 100,000 residents.

Today, the Mombacher Rheinufer provides a vital green space. It offers a place for recreation and relaxation. The Mombacher Rheinufer is not just a pretty view. It is a reminder of Mombach’s resilience. It reflects its ability to adapt through centuries of change. So, take a moment to appreciate this blend of nature and history.
