Imagine a treasure chest filled with stories. That is the Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Mainz. It safeguards centuries of knowledge. This library is more than just books. It is a portal to the past.

The Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Mainz began in 1477. It started as the library of the Kurmainz University. The French government dissolved the university in 1798 during the Revolutionskriege. In 1805, the library became the property of the city of Mainz.

The city had to cover its maintenance costs. Today, the Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Mainz holds around 700,000 media units. Among them are 1300 manuscripts. Two-thirds of these manuscripts date back to the Middle Ages. The library also owns seven oriental manuscripts from 1554 to 1680.

These manuscripts reached Mainz in 1686. They came from the library of Buda as loot. Baron Johann Karl von Thüngen brought them.

The Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Mainz also has a collection of fragments. These include Hebrew and Latin fragments. A late Carolingian fragment of an illustrated Beda commentary attracts attention. Printed holdings from former Carthusian and Carmelite libraries are unique. They reflect religious reflection between the late Middle Ages and the Enlightenment.

The library supports active research. It helps reconstruct and analyze the Carmelite library. 1,594 volumes of Carmelite provenance exist. They include 39 manuscripts and 289 incunabula by 1520. This aids provenance research and library historiography.

The library offers free access to sources. Experts guide users in their research. It assists with the institution’s services. The library also collects literature about Mainz and Rheinhessen. This includes writings about former parts of Mainz.

The building itself is noteworthy. It was completed in 1912. Stadtbauinspektor Adolf Gelius planned the building. It included the latest building technology for internal communication. This included elevators and pneumatic tube systems.

The library also houses special collections. These include the Joseph Scholz children’s book collection. Also, there is the Jacob Moyat ornithological book collection. The Peter Cornelius Archive resides here. It contains sources about the Mainz composer.

The Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Mainz faces challenges. Financial constraints led to cuts in periodicals. However, it continues to serve as a regional and research library. It focuses on regional studies. It also emphasizes research literature on manuscripts.

In 1994, the Mainzer Bibliotheksgesellschaft was founded. This society supports the Stadtbibliothek. It enhances its literary offerings. It supports publications and events.

So, next time you seek knowledge, remember this treasure house. The Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek Mainz is a keeper of stories. It is a beacon of learning for all.
