Did you know that St Franziskus in Mainz-Lerchenberg boasts a unique history? It stands as a testament to modern church architecture a beacon in the Lerchenberg district. This impressive church wasn’t always here. Construction of St Franziskus only began in 1982. It was completed in 1984. St Franziskus was the last new church built in Mainz’s city deaneries. Its consecration in October 1984 by Bishop Karl Lehmann marked a significant moment. Seventeen years after the Lerchenberg district was founded St Franziskus opened its doors.

The architects Hans Schilling and Peter Kulka designed St Franziskus. Their vision resulted in a building that is both modern and inspiring. The stained glass windows are especially noteworthy. Georg Meistermann created these stunning works of art. They depict a Stations of the Cross cycle. Other motifs include the birth of Christ the resurrection and the Heavenly Jerusalem. Meistermann’s artistic touch extends to allegories of faith hope and love. These windows fill the church with vibrant light and spiritual meaning.

The church’s impressive altar cross is a reproduction of the Werder bronze crucifix. The original dates back to around 1060. The Triumphal Cross behind the altar is a masterpiece by Leonhard Eder. It features the symbols of the four Evangelists. Mark is on the left John is at the top Luke is on the right and Matthew is at the bottom.

St Franziskus has had several significant figures associated with it. Before his ordination Gerhard Ludwig Müller served as a deacon there in 1977/78. He later became Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Ulrich Neymeyr the Bishop of Erfurt served as chaplain from 1982 to 1984. The church’s organ has a fascinating story too. The original instrument was built by Hofbauer from Göttingen. Its assembly in 1984 involved residents of Lebenshilfe Mainz-Lerchenberg. This project took place during the International Year of Disabled Persons. A new organ with 23 registers was installed in 2016. It was built by Hubert Fasen. Eight registers from the old organ were incorporated into this new one. The organ building project was supported by the St Franziskus organ building association. Founded in 2009 this association played a crucial role.

St Franziskus isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It embodies the spirit of Lerchenberg. This church is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith community and the enduring power of art. Its history is full of fascinating details.
