Who remembers Saint Alban? Here at the Albansstatue, we celebrate a figure shrouded in mystery. The Albansstatue itself dates from 1900. It’s a sandstone memorial, a statue dedicated to a man whose story intertwines with legends. This Alban is Saint Alban of Mainz, not to be confused with the British Saint Alban. The stories say Alban of Mainz was a priest, missionary, and martyr during the Late Roman Empire. He’s often depicted holding his head, a common motif for beheaded martyrs. Sources like Rabanus Maurus’s Martyrologium and Gozwin’s Passio sancti Albani tell conflicting tales. Was Alban from a Greek isle, exiled to Mainz? Or perhaps from Africa, fleeing Arian persecution? Did he die around 400 AD, or closer to 483? The stories vary. What’s clear is the impact Alban made on Mainz. A church and abbey, St. Alban’s Abbey, rose in his honor around 805. This abbey, later destroyed, became a significant center of learning. The abbey’s legacy echoes here, at the Albansstatue, reminding us of faith, martyrdom, and the tangled threads of history.
