This building has a past. It once belonged to a professor named Mainusch. The university neglected student spaces. So students took matters into their own hands. They occupied the empty building. They sought to create their own rooms on campus.

Haus Mainusch faced many threats. There were plans to build a youth hostel in 1996. A business row was planned in 1998. In 2000, a ring road was even considered. The Landesbetrieb Liegenschafts- und Baubetreuung oversees the property today. They planned a media center. This put Haus Mainusch at risk of demolition. The current usage agreement extends until 2025. This came after media center plans changed.

The Verein für ein unabhängiges Kommunikationszentrum operates Haus Mainusch. This translates to the Association for an Independent Communication Center.
