Imagine standing here east of Heidesheim am Rhein. We are at the NSG H\u00f6llenberg. It is a nature reserve spanning Mainz and the Mainz-Bingen district. It was established on April 5, 1995. The H\u00f6llenberg covers a generous 151.47 hectares.
Do you see that Autobahn A 60? It borders the area directly to the north. The namesake of this protected area is a mountain. It rises to 203.3 meters.
NSG H\u00f6llenberg offers many attractions. There are 18 hidden gems waiting. People enjoy hiking and cycling here. You can explore and visit.
I recommend the Seven Ponds. They were created for fish farming. Now they are being restored to their natural state. It is a lovely resting place. If you stay quiet you might hear a hoopoe calling. It sounds like “bup bup bup”. Listen for it from the end of April. Bring binoculars to observe the bird.
Near Mainz-Finthen, the Sieben Weiher are somewhat hidden. Baron von Waldthausen created them. This happened at the beginning of the 20th century.
Hikers can enjoy easy routes. One is about 5.79km. It takes about 1 hour and 31 minutes. Another easy hike is 6.38km. This one takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes. A shorter option is 4.57km. It’s an easy hike of about 1 hour and 10 minutes. For a more challenging hike try the intermediate route. It covers 10.6km. Plan for about 2 hours and 42 minutes.
