What secrets does the Holztor hold? Here, by the Rhine, stands the Holztor. It’s one of the three remaining towers of the medieval Mainz city walls. The Holztor, or “Wood Tower,” gets its name from the stacks of wood that once lined the Rhine’s banks here. Imagine rafts of timber floating downriver, destined for the bustling wood market held right at the Holztor’s gate. This tower wasn’t just a gateway. It served as a watchtower, guarding the city from potential threats. The Holztor also played a grimmer role. It housed prisoners, including the infamous outlaw Schinderhannes and his gang. They were held here in 1803 before their execution at the former Electoral Palace of Favorite. The Holztor’s current Gothic look dates to the early 15th century. It has seen its share of history. The tower withstood wars and witnessed Mainz’s transformation. Damaged during World War II, the Holztor was faithfully restored in 1961 for Mainz’s 2000th anniversary. Now, it houses various organizations and clubs. Look closely at the tower’s details. Notice the pointed archway and the ribbed vault within the gate passage. The polygonal turrets with their pointed roofs add to the tower’s charm. Due to the raising of the Rhine’s banks, the original gate passage now lies about three meters below street level. The Holztor stands as a testament to Mainz’s rich past, from its medieval fortifications to its modern-day vibrancy.
