Imagine the echoes of Mainz’s history swirling around us here at the Prinz-Holstein-Denkmal. This monument tells a tale of military service and civic appreciation. It is a tribute to a man who significantly impacted this city.

The Prinz-Holstein-Denkmal commemorates Heinrich Carl Woldemar Prinz von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. Woldemar was a Prussian General of the Cavalry. He became an honorary citizen of Mainz. The city erected this mausoleum in his honor in 1882.

Who was this man worthy of such recognition? Born in Leipzig in 1810, Woldemar started his career studying law. He joined the Corps Lusatia Leipzig. A duel forced him to leave university early. He then pursued a military career in the Prussian Army.

His military service saw him rise through the ranks. He became a Second Lieutenant in 1828. He progressed to Premier Lieutenant by 1837. By 1844, he was with the Garde du Corps. He became a Major in 1845. His career eventually brought him to Schleswig-Holstein in 1848.

Woldemar’s ascent continued. He became a staff officer in 1850. In the same year, he was assigned as the commander of the Küstrin Fortress. Then, in 1851, he commanded the fortress of Neiße. Promotions to Lieutenant Colonel in 1852 and Colonel in 1854 followed. By 1857, he was the commander of Magdeburg. He even became an honorary citizen there in 1858.

Further accolades came as he commanded Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein. By 1861, he was a Lieutenant General. He became an adjutant general to King Wilhelm I. In 1862, he was named commander-in-chief of the federal troops in Frankfurt am Main.

Finally, in 1864, Woldemar’s path led him to Mainz. He was appointed Vice Governor of the Mainz Fortress. By 1866, he achieved the rank of General of the Cavalry. From 1866 until his death in 1871, he served as Governor of the Mainz Fortress. His contributions were so valued that Mainz made him an honorary citizen in 1871.

Interestingly, this Prinz-Holstein-Denkmal is in Mainz Main Cemetery between field 27 and 30. It is a mausoleum designed by city architect Eduard Kreyßig. He modeled it after a Roman tomb in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The medallion featuring the Prince’s bust is the work of sculptor Heinrich Barth. Also, a cavalier of the Rheingauwall got the name “Prinz Holstein”.

As we stand here, remember Woldemar’s journey. He was a man who served his country. He earned the respect and gratitude of Mainz. The Prinz-Holstein-Denkmal is more than just stone. It is a lasting symbol of his legacy. It is a reminder of the impact one individual can have on a city’s history.
